Three Popular and Effective Ways to Whiter Teeth

How a Harley Street Dentist Can Brighten Your Smile

We would all love to have white teeth and many of us can probably recall the time when our teeth were much whiter than they currently are. There is no point in living in the past however, but, whatever age we are, there are still methods available to ensure that we can have fantastic looking white teeth to bring out the best in our smile.

Essentially, there are three key ways to have whiter teeth and we will take a look at those here.

Prevention

Providing that you are relatively young and your teeth are already a nice shade of white, the best thing that you can do is to take care of your teeth. It should go without saying that regular brushing and flossing are essential, as are regular check ups at your dentist and dental hygienist to ensure that any potential problems are detected and treated at an early stage.

In addition to this however, you can lengthen the period of time when your teeth appear naturally white by using a tooth whitening toothpaste. Although the active ingredient in these is low due to safety reasons, this may be sufficient during the years when your teeth are naturally white.

Avoid smoking as, as well as other health factors, this will undoubtedly stain your teeth and cause a yellowing effect. Other foods and drinks can also have a similar effect, notably tea, coffee and red wine; all of which will stain your teeth.

Tooth Whitening Procedure

As you get older, however well you have taken care of your teeth and followed the advice above, your teeth will almost certainly start to take on a yellowish hue over a period of time. This, sadly, is just yet another fact of getting older and is caused by the discolouration of the molecules inside our teeth that no amount of cleaning with toothpaste will get rid off.

At this stage a professional tooth whitening procedure is recommended. Although tooth whitening toothpastes may help a little, they will not be strong enough to make a significant difference to the appearance of your teeth. ‘At Home’ kits do contain a stronger solution of the whitening ingredient but can be difficult to apply and have been known to cause burns of the lips and gums when not applied correctly.

At our Harley Street dental practice, we offer a professional tooth whitening procedure which takes approximately one hour and has an instant impact on the whiteness of the patient’s teeth. Simply by applying a whitening gel to the teeth and activating this with a special light, the gel works to lighten the colour of the molecules within the teeth and leave a bright white appearance afterwards.

The effects of this procedure last for several months and can vary from person to person. We do provide a ‘support’ kit though to lengthen this period, but the treatment is safe to be repeated in the future should the patient wish to do so.

Dental Veneers

Dental veneers, which are very fine layers of porcelain that are attached to the prepared surface of a tooth, can also be used to whiten teeth. These are usually used when the teeth are very badly discoloured and a tooth whitening procedure would not be sufficient.

They are also ideal for teeth that are showing hairline cracks or have become chipped over the years. These dental veneers can rapidly transform a mouthful of cracked and discolored teeth into a beautiful smile that the owner can rightly be proud of.
